„PANDA“ BROOCH

The brooch represents a panda bear, and uses an important baroque pearl from the South Seas to form its body. Paws and head are in engraved white gold, embellished with diamonds. Two fancy yellow diamonds have been used for the eyes, enhanced by a black, zigrinato engraved, rhodium plated contour. The Panda is shown eating bamboo shoots made in engraved yellow gold.  This creation, along with the Spider in its web and the Snail, are part of a one-of-a-kind collection of important brooches, representing various animals and insects crafted around strangely shaped, baroque pearls of exceptional size. It was precisely their bizarre size and shape that would sometimes suggest the subject to Gianmaria Buccellati. In many instances they gave rise to authentic miniature sculptures, whose appearance recalls those strange creatures with bodies made around baroque pearls belonging to the Collection—well-known to Gianmaria—of Anna Maria Luisa de’ Medici, now in the Tesoro dei Granduchi.  EndFragment

Mario Buccellati – 1929 Tiara gold, platinum plated silver and diamonds
TIARA
This magnificent tiara, with a mixtilinear profile, is made of platinized silver lined in yellow gold. The main body of the piece is in tulle or honeycomb workmanship and serves as the base for an elegant floral and foliate decoration, brightened by diamonds and rose-cut diamonds. The item was created by Mario Buccellati for an Italian aristocrat and was bought by Gianmaria Buccellati at a major jewelry auction in 1998. While the design is reminiscent of styles that were in vogue in Europe at the end of the 19th century, it is also innovative in its use of the tulle workmanship, which conveys an impression of weightlessness to the tiara. MEDICI BOX
Gianmaria Buccellati – 1970 Medici Box yellow, red and white gold, steel and diamonds
The sides, lid and base of this decagonal box are formed of rectangular and trapezoidal panels in blackened steel, each edged with a yellow gold, leaves modeled frame. Each one of the panels is adorned with an elegant motif of acanthus volutes, leaves and flowers, pierced from single gold plates that seem suspended over the blackened background. Five diamonds set within red gold bezels, beautify the flowers on each single panel. The lid of the box displays a rather complicate design of plant racemes and flowers with centering diamonds, culminating with a white gold rosette dome shaped decoration, again embellished with diamonds. The same decoration, though without diamonds, graces the base of the box. The inside is lined in polished gold. The extraordinary object is the first artwork designed by Gianmaria Buccellati for his own collection of Precious Objects. After he visited the Treasury of the Grand Dukes (formerly Museo degli Argenti) at Pitti Palace in 1968, he began to think about conceiving and creating a jewel that would pay homage to the splendour of the treasures of the Medici’s family displayed there. Little by little, the idea became the exquisite box whose decagonal, austere structure goes back to the precise rules of the Florentine Renaissance architecture. The elegant ornamental design of the panels of the Medici Box, with their striking chromatic effects based upon the contrast of the gold and the blackened steel, however, has been probably inspired by the polychrome marble tarsias found on panels, ambos or pulpits of Florentine Renaissance architecture. „GRAN DAMA“  BROOCH
This masterwork represents a female figure in a comfortable, flowing garment crafted in various colors of gold, highlighted with fancy colored diamonds. Gianmaria Buccellati has deeply and accurately studied both gold and diamond colors and has used them to match and enhance the large Melo Melo pearl at the center of the figure. The head is formed of a second pearl (this one drop shaped), framed with waving locks in white gold, set with diamonds at the front, and finely engraved at the back.  Gianmaria Buccellati conceived this important jewel after having acquired an astounding Melo Melo pearl which presents the distinctive, peculiar orange color, typical of these gems. The Melo Melo is one of the rarest varieties of pearls existing in the world. Due to their rarity, the Melo Melo pearls were, in the past, the exclusive appannage of the Vietnamese Imperial Family, since the univalve gasteropods responsible for forming these pearls live in the seas around Vietnam. Such circumstance meant that until the fall of the Vietnamese monarchy in 1945, the existence of these pearls had remained in a shroud of mystery.  After having acquired the pearl, Gianmaria set out to design a jewel worth of its perfection. The first versions he sketched—one inspired by the sun, another by a flower—were very soon put aside, however, as he found them too banal. “What the pearl suggested to me was The World, though not in a geographical sense,” Gianmaria recalled. “What I was thinking of was the universal world, the perpetuation of the human kind, which is continued down the generations by Woman. Through procreation, the woman engenders life, with all the beauty and nobility associated with pregnancy.” And finally he conceived a female figure, the Gran Dama, that enhances the shape of the pearl, transforming it into a symbol of maternity.  EndFragment
Gianmaria Buccellati – 2006 Gran Dama Brooch yellow gold, white gold, red gold, pink gold, green gold, black gold, Melo pearl, drop pearl and diamonds
The tureen is in silver, finely repoussé and chiseled and stands on a low, oval, curved, sculpted foot. The body is masterly embossed to create a tight decorative ivy leaves pattern; inside, there is a removable bowl, also in silver. The lid, also decorated with ivy leaves, has a handle in the form of a globe of red jasper elegantly supported by a row of leaves. The plain-bottomed tray has a low, rouche modeled edge, while the brim echoes the decorative ivy-leaf motif.  Compared with other silver masterworks conceived and designed by Gianmaria Buccellati, these particular items are remarkable for the exuberant ornamentation covering the whole surface of both the tureen and the tray. TUREEN IN REPOUSSÉ SILVER
This masterpiece is composed of three sections in rock crystal. The oval, fluted foot displays a broad gold band decorated with burin-engraved leaves and one row of ashlar-like motifs set with tsavorites and pink sapphires, both faceted. The balustered stem is connected to foot and cup via two ashlar shaped nodes, again embellished with tsavorites and sapphires. The same ornamental motif of bejeweled ashlars forms the structure at the lip of the cup, while the body presents prominent bosses. The thin gold plate partially closing the base of the foot is intricately burin-engraved, using the rigato and the ornato techniques. The inner surface of the lip-mounting and the oval gold plate at the bottom of the rock crystal cup is similarly finely engraved.  The cup was completed by Gianmaria Buccellati just before the opening of the exhibition at the Treasury of the Grand Dukes (formerly Museo degli Argenti) in Pitti Palace in December 2014, and represents his personal hommage to the Florentine art and culture. The idea to make use of boss shaped motifs for the structure or the decoration of a cup, had already been developed by Gianmaria some decades earlier for the Cup of the Muses; both cups have been inspired by the ashlar-like faces of many Florentine Renaissance Palazzi. FLORENTIA CUP
Gianmaria Buccellati – 1972 Ring with ruby and brillant-cut diamonds yellow and white gold with ruby and diamonds
„TURBAN“ RING WITH RUBY
The head of the ring, oval and dome shaped, is formed of ears of corn motifs in white gold set with diamonds, alternating with narrower filets in yellow gold, leaves modeled. Mounted at the center is a claw-set cabochon ruby; the claws are also leaves modeled and finely engraved. The ring is formed of four delicately sculpted and engraved yellow gold bands that widens at the top.  Manufactured with impeccable technical skill and remarkable attention to the chiaroscuro effects and the play of plenums and voids, this ring was conceived by Gianmaria
Buccellati as a precious miniature turban, thus evoking the magical world of the famous collection of tales in Arabic: The Thousand and One Nights. A special feeling of gratitude goes to the dear Japanese client who, having known about the constitution of the Foundation, decided to be part of it by donating this jewel as a gesture of great admiration. With a peculiar foresight and sense of philanthropy, in 2008 Gianmaria Buccellati decided to found his own foundation to promote the aesthetic values, the know-how and the story of Buccellati in the world. In its first decade, the Gianmaria Buccellati Foundation has partnered with some of the most prestigious museums and cultural institutions, as the Kremlin Museums in Moscow, Pitti Palace in Florence and the National Library of St Mark’s in Venice. Together with them, it brought thousands of people to discover and appreciate one of the most interesting examples of contemporary goldsmith art history. The Foundations Collection is made of an exclusive variety of jewels, objects of art and original drawings by Mario and Gianmaria Buccellati. Each piece expresses their unique talents in using antique goldsmithing techniques and their deep knowledge of art, which always inspired them to draw new designs. Therefore, the Foundation presents a century of creative production in the goldsmith art and represents an extraordinary example of entrepreneurial culture that leaded the artisans in the 20th century to measure with the Renaissance masters. The Gianmaria Buccellati Foundation, located in Florence, is a non profit organization which aims to conserve and promote its artistic collection, to study, research and conserve the goldsmithing and engraving techniques of XVI, XVII and XVIII Centuries, to catalog and research part of the drawing production of Mario and Gianmaria Buccellati, including other significant documents. As homage from Gianmaria Buccellati to the State of Italy, part of the Foundation’s Collection was exhibited at the Treasury of the Grand Dukes, formerly the Museo degli Argenti, in the Pitti Palace, in a dedicated room from 2015 to 2019.

THE COMMITMENTBEYONDTHE REALMOF WORK SOCIALANDHUMANITARIANACTIVITIES
Beyond the realm of work, which however fills almost all of his time, Gianmaria Buccellati is very involved with social and humanitarian activities. 1952 He was a founder member of the first Lions Club in Italy, the «Lions Club Milan», of which he was appointed Secretary, a position he held for seven years. 1973 As part of a group of fellow jewellers, he founded the ISTITUTO GEMMOLOGICO ITALIANO (IGI), of which he was President for 25 years and today is Honorary President. The IGI has as its purpose the diffusion of the gemmological science in Italy at levels of education and scientific research. Although it was the last of its kind to be created in the international field, the IGI very quickly caught up with its American, British, German, French, Swiss and Japanese partners in terms of the seriousness and validity of its technical and scientific structure, and the training courses it organises and holds in Italy. After just five years, the Istituto Gemmologico Italiano was recognised as an «Associazione con Personalità Giuridica» by Presidential decree no. 767, 11 August 1979. 1981 During his period as Honorary Consul-General of Honduras (from 1981 until 2001), he assisted the citizens of Honduras and actively promoted and developed cultural and trade relations between the two countries. One very important event is the National Festival celebrated on 15 September with the Consuls of Guatemala, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, at which the consular staff, business and civil communities, and civil, military and religious authorities are present. 1984 In 1984 he participated in the founding of the Associazione Amici del Centro  «Dino Ferrari», of which he was appointed a Member of the Board. The association has its offices in the Neurological Clinic of the Ospedale Maggiore in Milan. Its aim is research into neuromuscular and degenerative illnesses, and raising funds for this purpose. 1985 He participated in the founding of the Rotary Club Milano Naviglio Grande, of which he was an active member for a long period. 1987 His love of Italian art and culture prompted him to accept the invitation in 1987 of being co-founder of the group «I 200 del FAI, Fondo Ambiente Italiano», a non-profit association formed by businessmen and intellectuals with the aim of safeguarding the enormous artistic and historic heritage that Italy risks losing for ever. Through direct financing and fund-raising events the FAI recovers, restores and returns to the public artworks – in particular important palaces – in their original beauty. 1988 He was first the promoter, then a participant, in the formation of the committee called MADE IN ITALY, Design, Art and Creativity. This is a non-profit association of which he was appointed President. The association’s aim is to promote annual events in all sectors in which Italian design, which is itself considered creative and cultural, is synonymous with the high quality that Italian products represent throughout the world. The first event during Gianmaria’s presidency was held in November 1990 in Turin, in the Palavela. Called PROFILO ITALIA, the exhibition received the high patronage of the office of the Prime Minister as part of the series of events organised to mark the end of Italy’s six-month presidency of the European Community. In 1988, he was again among the promoters and founding members of the association «Amici della Cultura in Costa Smeralda», as part of his belief that culture and art should always be part of life, even on holiday. 1989 In October he was appointed a Councillor of the International Federation for Human Rights of Lombardy. 1994 He joined the COMITATO LEONARDO, ITALIAN QUALITY COMMITTEE, a non-profit association of private individuals and businessmen formed under the auspices of the National Institute for Foreign Trade, of which he is still a Councillor. The association has the following aims: –  working to increase the presence abroad and raise appreciation of Italian culture and      its quality products; –  reuniting internationally famous Italians who are representative of Italian culture      and quality through their efforts, prestige and renown; –  promoting the awareness of Italy abroad through its high quality products; –  supporting the cultural, social and economically stimulating role      of Italian high-quality products; –  conceiving and implementing all those activities that contribute to      the accomplishment of the above aims. 1992 Gianmaria Buccellati is co-founder of ALTAGAMMA FOUNDATION an association of Italian companies with the objective to reinforce their presence at the international level and to support their development. The Founders express Italian culture and style in their products and services, but also in the management of their companies. They are all placed in the highest ranking of the market and they stand out for innovation, quality, service, design and reputation. In 2002 the Altagamma International Honorary Council also started, a system of relations with foreign companies and institutions that share the same cultural and entrepreneurial values and contribute to spread the Italian lifestyle abroad: today, the Council counts 98 members, from Countries all over the world. 2013 At the end of 2013, Gianmaria Buccellati and his wife Rosa Maria Bresciani Buccellati retired from the company: they turned over their shares partly to Clessidra (an institutional fund supporting valuable companies in their development by investing the necessary funds with this aim) and partly to the three sons and to the nephew Luca, who keep on working inside the company and bring forward the family tradition.  In particular, the second-born son, Andrea (gifted with artistic taste) became President of Buccellati Holding Italia S.p.A., while Gianmaria is appointed Honorary President for life. Since then, Gianmaria could dedicate himself to the creation and development of the «Gianmaria Buccellati Foundation», which aims to promote and pass on to future generations the culture and the art of Buccellati, incorporated in the creations of his father Mario and his descendants. Confirming the above, early in 2014 the famous Museo degli Argenti, asked Gianmaria Buccellati to design a retrospective exhibition of his works to be inaugurated in December 2014 in the Pitti Palace. In addition, once the temporary exhibit has ended it has proposed to entitle a section of the museum in Gianmaria’s name, where they will exhibit the collection of the foundation on a permanent basis. In this way they will celebrate the name Buccellati, considered one of the leading goldsmiths who has honored with his work the art of the Italian goldsmiths of the Renaissance. «The most beautiful jewelthat I have created?…The one that I have yet to design». This phrase sums up the Gianmaria Buccellati’s philosophy, that inspired a whole life of work.

„ANEMONE“ SET
A special feeling of gratitude goes to the dear Japanese client who, having known about the constitution of the Foundation, while maintaining anonymity, decided to be part of it donating this jewel as a gesture of great admiration for the inspiration and creativity of Gianmaria Buccellati. A cabochon ruby rises atop of an open turban-like crown of diamonds set in white gold alternated with veins of yellow gold. Each precisely carved and engraved section join in harmony expressing months of patient work. EndFragment
This ring, which was donated by a long time French admirer of Gianmaria Buccellati’s art, represented a particularly difficult challenge to create as he chose to execute it in platinum. Platinum is harder than gold and this hardness does not lend itself to the intricate engraving and the airy lace effect so associated with Gianmaria’s art. However, this ring happens to hold a beautiful 3 carat black opal. The extra strength of the platinum serves as an additional protection for the delicate opal. An exercise in craftsmanship for his artisans to work in this difficult metal. A test they have passed beautifully. EndFragment
DONATIONS
This donation, from a valued Italian client who wishes to remain anonymous, represents Gianmaria Buccellati’s interpretation of the Anemone flower. In an effort to capture their beauty Gianmaria, in the early 70’s, created an entirely new technique in the goldsmiths art. This involved creating paper thin sheets of different colors of gold, fusing them together into one and then shaping and engraving them in such a way that the colors appear as the piece is engraved. The final result, this lovely set of a brooch, matching ring and earrings, is truly unique in the world of the goldsmith. It represents both Gianmaria’s creativity and the skills of his artisans in the highest possible way. EndFragment
